Overview of Importer License

If you are an importer who imports pre-packaged products and then distributes or sells them, you need supervision from an import quality department.

Legal Metrology Department of India is that department and it provides this monitoring by issuing LMPC certificate. LMPC Full Form stands for Legal Metrology Packaged Commodities – Act governing the certification process thereafter.

Also known as import permit, LMPC certification has to be applied for within 90 days of commencement of importation.

Eligibility criteria for Importer License in India

Importer has to make declarations before importing goods into India

According to the Legal Metrology Packaged Commodity (LMPC) Certification Rules published in 2011, any importer must comply with them and thus make mandatory declarations before commencing importation.

Declarations – They are as follows

  1. Country of origin of the product
  2. Details of the manufacturer, including name and address
  3. Address of the manufacturer
  4. Month and year in which the product was manufactured.
  5. Year when the product is to be imported.

However, the range of declarations would vary depending upon the nature of the product. For example, the declarations associated with food products would be different from declarations made for electronic or electrical products.

If the importer doesn’t make the following declaration, he or she is not eligible for the LMPC certificate.
