Overview of Model Approval Certificate

According to Section 22 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 The Department of Legal Metrology issued approval for the model. This certificate indicates that the product is in accordance with Indian metrological standards. According to Section 22 of the Legal Metrology Act, the manufacturer of the product will have to receive model approval from the Central Government through its legal metrology, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ministry located in Delhi. Valid model approval is illegal without use or construction or importing any type of weight or measurement.

Eligibility criteria for Model Approval Certificate in India

  1. In accordance with the rules of the Legal Metrology Model approved certificate, the weight and measurement of the importer or manufacturer must meet the regulatory requirements of the Legal Metrology Department.
  2. Each person should find the approval of the model in a specified manner by the production or measurement units of any weight or measurement units.

In the following cases the approval of the model is not required

  1. cast iron
  2. Brass
  3. Bullions
  4. Carat weight
  5. Midscale
  6. Length measures (not measuring tapes)
  7. Retailers ordinarily use them to measure textiles or timbers.
  8. Capacity measures (Not exceeding 20 liters incapacity)
  9. Retailers ordinarily use them for measuring.
  10. kerosene,
  11. milk, or
  12. postal liquors

Documents required to obtain an Model Approval Certificate

  1. Certificate of Incorporation
  2. Other business licenses pertaining to your business
  3. Two passport-sized photographs of the applicant
  4. A duly filled application form
  5. Schematic diagram of the weights and/or measuring product
  6. Description of the sealing provisions of the product
  7. If you are an importer, you have to make a declaration that no change in the product before the product is sold
  8. Input the required details on the package’s display pane.
  9. Receipt of the model approval fees
