Overview of IEC Code Registration

IEC is a brief name for import export codes. Any institution or business requires this certification to improve its way. Any person, partnership or business requires this certification to complete the import and export -related activities in India.

Director General of External Affairs (DGFT) – This is the number of ten digits that provides evidence that business can engage in imports and exports. The applicant needs to register for the IEC code.

Eligibility criteria for IEC Code Registration in India

  1. Proprietorship Firm – An individual carrying out the process of imports and exports would require to secure the IEC certification.
  2. Partnership Firm – A firm of partners would require taking this certification, if they are exporting & importing products.
  3. Limited Liability Partnership – Any partnership formed under the limited liability partnership act, 2008 (LLP Act, 2008) would require to take this certification in the business of trading outside India.
  4. Private Limited Company – Any company incorporated under the Companies Act, Companies Act 2013/earlier.
  5. Trust – Any form of entity engaged in carrying out the activities for the beneficiary has to comply with the requirement of securing the Import Export Code.
  6. Hindu Undivided Family – Any Hindu Undivided Family where the individuals comprise of a Karta & Sole members would, require this form of certification for carrying out imports & exports.
  7. Society – Any company incorporated under the Societies and Co-operative Societies Registration Act.

Documents required to obtain an IEC Code Registration

GST under IEC code
  1. Under the Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, indirect tax will be imposed on goods imported into the country.
  2. PAN is used for IEC number.
  3. GSTIN will be cited on transactions that represent the influx of imports. It will be used to calculate interstate trade. The GSTIN number should, be cited for any other form of refund / exemption.
  4. No government institution will need any import export code to complete procedures and procedures related to import and export.

Hindu Undivided Family (HUF)
